The Philippine Inter-island Sailing Foundation (PHINSAF) has announced the 11th Philippine Hobie Challenge, that will take Hobie sailors on an island-hopping route from Lucena to Boracay. This event is the highlight of the Hobie 16 sailing year and is open to international and local sailors. So far teams from Australia, Japan and the Philippines have signed up; team numbers are limited there are only 14 two-person-team slots still available at the time of writing.

The Philippine Hobie Challenge was conceived to offer a true challenge to sailors who wanted to spend a thrilling week enjoying the islands of the Philippines. Each year a different start point is used, and the courses are designed to offer a mixture rough-and-tumble and fast-and-flat distance racing, plus conventional in-shore, buoy racing.

Although one or other team from Australia usually wins, everyone has so much fun that participation is as rewarding as finishing first.

The PHINSAF Philippine Hobie Challenge in 2011 will leave Lucena on 12th February and arrive in Boracay on 19th February. Scheduled stops along the way include the islands of Marinduque, Romblon and Sibuyan.

Coincident with the Hobie 16 sailing is a cruising yacht rally that effectively supports the Hobie fleet in case someone gets into trouble with broken gear. So if you do not want to get wet hanging out on a trapeze all day, but still want to enjoy the beauty of Philippine sailing, the beaches and the islands, then you can enter the rally and feel useful at the same time. There is no limit to the number of yachts in the rally but you need to sign up in advance so that en-route arrangements can be made – some of the beaches are very remote and food & drink must be ordered well in advance.

The Philippine Hobie Challenge 2011 is a sailing adventure of approximately 200 nautical miles and promises great sailing, sensational beaches, five legs of racing over six nights, plus a five-race inshore series. The coincident cruising yacht rally, plus the converted 90-foot trawler “Novena”, will be used for all the logistical equipment, food etc.. Time permitting, there will be opportunities to do a little sightseeing around the islands along the way.
