Windsurfing and kiteboarding competition is natural in Subic bay, with on-shore breezes for much of the year, with only modest waves. Every summer Subic Bay hosts the largest gathering of windsurfing and kiteboarding enthusiasts for the middle-of-season competition in Subic Bay, part of the Philippine Windsurfing Association (“PWA”) 2009 Philippines Windsurfing Series. The event attracts international windsurfing and kiteboarding enthusiasts from around the World, including: Hawaii, North America, Fiji, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

From 18-19th July 2009, the Francisco Cup Wind and Kite Blow Out 2009 promises to be bigger and better than 2008, when almost 100 boards enthusiasts descended on Subic Bay to enjoy the blustery southwest monsoon winds mixed up with a few showers and squalls to record super fast speeds across and above the water, with some spectacular wipe-outs.

Surprisingly, for such a fantastic windsurfing and kiteboarding location, Subic Bay has very few windsurfing boards for rent, but there are a few so don’t hesitate if you don’t have your own equipment, there will be some on offer for rent on the day.

Don’t worry also if you have never been windsurfing or kiteboarding in the Philippines before, the Philippines is a very friendly place to windsurf and kiteboard and Subic Bay makes the experience all the more spectacular. Fly in from anywhere and share the international passion for speed over the water.

Getting to Subic Bay for the windsurfing and kitebaording is even easier than before, with the new Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway (“SCTEx”) open for business, making Subic Bay just a 45-minute trip from the international airport at Clark / Angeles City or just about two hours from Metro Manila’s main international airport NAIA. If you don’t have your own transport you can take an air-conditioned bus (Victory Liner or Saulog Transport – Victory Liner have the best seats) from almost anywhere along EDSA in Metro Manila or, there are buses and private hire minibuses from Clark / Angeles City, to Olongapo City – either way, it is just a short taxi ride to the waterfront at Moonbay Marina.

The best place to stay at Moonbay Marina is The Lighthouse Marina Resort Hotel but the Subic Park Hotel is a great alternative. After-race gatherings are usually held at the Lighthouse Marina Resort Hotel where the legendary hospitality of the 720-Bar will keep you partying into the night.
