The Royal Heavylift All Souls Regatta in Puerto Galera marks the start of the Philippine sailing regatta season. The cooler northeast monsoon brings excellent sailing breezes and the waters off Puerto Galera’s famous beaches are cut by the hulls of racing yachts, cruising yachts and sports boats of all shapes and sizes.

From 31st October to 2nd November, 2009, the Puerto Galera Yacht Club opens its doors to sailing enthusiasts of every age and from across the seven seas.

The competition at the Royal Heavylift All Souls Regatta demonstrates the sport of sailing at its best. The pursuit race sailing handicap format of the All Souls Regatta in Puerto Galera is calculated so that all sailing yachts arrive at the finish line together – start-times are based on the computed sailing performance depending on the sailing yacht, the prevailing tides and the all important sailing breeze.

During the mornings the boats all leave Muelle Pier at their assigned start times. The all-out racing yachts, like Karakoa, Subic Centennial, Challenge, Selma Star and Sandoway, have time for an awfully civilized brunch ashore, while the slower cruising yachts, who start each day much earlier, have the rare chance of a leisurely breakfast on the water. Usually by 3.00pm all the sailing yacht are converging on the finish line and everyone can see who has won, so a raft-up swimming party at the finish line is frequently a prelude to more celebrations back at the Puerto Galera Yacht club at sundown.
