The Philippine International Windsurfing Open 2009 brings the World of windsurfing to Puerto Galera on 6th – 8th February.

The 2009 International Windsurfing Open event is the fourth in the series of Puerto Galera windsurfing competitions and will be held at the Sandbar Windsurfing School on Boquete Beach, Muelle Bay. The 2008 windsurfing open event saw more than 70 windsurfers compete in Puerto Galera from as far away as Japan and Hawaii. The usually strong breeze, with wind speeds in excess of 20 knots, will ensure maximum enjoyment for the competitors and fantastic photography opportunities.

With the unexpected cancelling of the Boracay Funboard Cup, in January, this Puerto Galera windsurfing event will be the first opportunity for windsurfers to compete in the Philippines in 2009. It will also mark the beginning of the Philippine Windsurfing Association 2009 Championship. Although it is a Philippine championship event, it is also open to anyone with a passion for windsurfing, with prizes and fun for all.

The competition is divided into groups depending on age and experience, so there is always a chance of winning your first windsurfing trophy, here in Puerto Galera.

Come to Puerto Galera in February and enjoy one of the best windsurfing destinations in the Asia. Join in the competition or sit on the beach and watch the spectacle or revel in the action photography opportunities offered by the sun, wind and water. Spectators watch for free; if you want to compete then the entry fee is Php1,500, inclusive of snacks and prizes. Don’t forget to bring the sunblock and flaunt your shades in Puerto Galera.

If you have time on your hands then you can hitch a ride aboard a cruising yacht from Puerto Galera, after the windsurfing, and join up with the Philippine Hobie Challenge at Marinduque Island or Romblon Island. A small fleet of cruising yachts will be assembling in Puerto Galera and joining a rally to follow the Hobie Challenge as it makes its way to Boracay Island. This will be a great on-the-water venue to practise action photography. For more information about the rally, contact the Puerto Galera Yacht Club.
