The Puerto Galera Yacht Club (the Cruising Yacht Club of the Philippines) has announced the first of a new Cruising Yacht Race Series aimed at stimulating more, competitive sailing in the Philippines. The new Cruising Yacht Race Series will comprise twelve nominated races throughout the year, with the best seven results counting towards the overall championship (Did Not Start a race can be a discarded result).

Designed primarily to attract all those who enjoy “cruising with intent” but who are not equipped with high-tech racing sails and fanatical crew, the Cruising Yacht Race Series will follow the pursuit-racing rules format that has made the Puerto Galera Yacht Club famous around Asia for fun racing.

The Cruising Yacht Race Series will kick off on 9th January, 2011, and every 2nd Sunday of the month thereafter. The only exceptions will be that one race in each of the All Souls, Xmas and Easter regattas will count towards the championship, replacing the “2nd Sunday of the month” race during that month. And, if the weather turns really nasty on one Sunday or another then that scheduled race will be held the following weekend.

Departing from tradition, race entry fees will only be charged on race days when the finish-line destination includes a beach Bar-B-Que, otherwise the race entry fees are nil. On race days when there is no beach Bar-B-Que, nibbles and free beer will be offered to all participants upon arrival back at the clubhouse.

The Cruising Yacht Race Series is offered in response to popular demand, as more club members now have their own yachts and keep them in Puerto Galera.

You can join in the fun even if you do not have a boat in Puerto Galera. Most yachts participating in the Cruising Yacht Race Series will be happy to have extra crew aboard, especially if you know how to buy a six-pack and some munchies. If you know your ropes and want to just get out on the water to enjoy a little bit of friendly competition then be at the clubhouse at 9.00am on any given race day and let someone know that you want to join in.

Race results will be posted on the Puerto Galera Yacht Club website following each race so you can keep an eye on who is leading throughout the year. Sponsorship opportunities on a per-race or whole-regatta basis are available to companies who have something that they want to promote to members of the sailing community – contact the Puerto Galera Yacht Club for details.
