The 39th annual Iloilo Paraw Regatta will be taking place between 19th and 21st February, 2010, along the Iloilo waterfront. The Iloilo Paraw Regatta 2010 is definitely the longest running competitive sailing event in the Philippines and probably the longest running competitive sailing event in Asia, next to the China Sea Race.

One of the most interesting aspects of this sailing event is that most of the sails are uniquely painted for the occasion. Local schools and colleges are encouraged to let loose their art students in a frenzy of creative daubing and there are prizes for the best paraw sail designs as well as for the best sailing performance on the water.

The boats are all locally designed/built outrigger design sailing boats and are extraordinarily fast with the breeze on the beam. Iloilo in February usually offers excellent sailing breezes from the northeast, making the racing very fast and somewhat furious – certainly local favourites are expected to perform well.

The Iloilo Paraw Regatta is part of a week long festival in Iloilo, so if you are thinking of where to be and what to do in the Philippines in February then the Iloilo Paraw Regatta is definitely one of the best places to be.

If you have never been to Iloilo before then check out the airlines that fly there on MyCam Asia’s How To Fly To guide and book early for the best schedules and prices. Iloilo is one of the historic cities in the Philippines and is famous for, amongst other things, the first golf club to be established in the Philippines, in 1908 – the Iloilo Golf and Country Club.
