The Commodore’s Cup (5th – 6th December) at Caliraya Lake, Cavinti/Lumban, Laguna, is organised by the Philippine Windsurfing Association and brings the best windsurfing and kiteboarding practitioners from around the Philippines and across Asia together for the final event of the 2009 Philippine Windsurfing Series. The Commodore’s Cup event is open to all national and international windsurfing and kiteboarding enthusiasts.

The Commodore’s Cup is an annual event designed to close out the Philippine Windsurfing Series racing season, that this year started in Puerto Galera way back in February. At Caliraya Lake the 2009 Philippine windsurfing and kiteboarding champions will be crowned.

Caliraya Lake is about two hours drive South from Metro Manila and is a perfect location for day tripping or weekend camping at one of its numerous lakeside camp sites.

Caliraya Lake enjoys fantastic windsurfing and kiteboarding breezes during the northeast monsoon (Amihan). It is the closest best place for windsurfing and kiteboarding to Metro Manila.

If you want to know how to get to Caliraya Lake: take the South Superhighway South to Calamba and then East along the National Highway to Santa Cruz, Laguna; from Santa Cruz take the road signposted to Cavinti/Lumban and you will wind your way South up the escarpment (great views of Laguna De Bay looking North to Metro Manila if the air is clear) and onwards to Caliraya Lake, situated at about 1,200 feet above sea level.

There is no charge for windsurfing and kiteboarding spectators & action water sports photographers at Caliraya Lake and car parking is very inexpensive.

If the windsurfing and kiteboarding is too much like hard work then you can rent a boat and go fishing for bass on the lake. Caliraya Lake was stocked with black bass from the U.S.A. in the 1930s, shortly after the dam was built that created the lake to provide hydro electric power. The black bass were originally intended for recreational sport fishing for colonials-only but have since become sport for all resident anglers and a growing number of anglers visiting the Philippines from overseas.

After the Commodore’s Cup at Caliraya Lake, the next windsurfing and kiteboarding event will be the Boracay Funboard Cup, held in Boracay, in January . . . details of the Boracay Funboard Cup will be found here at GetWet Philippines soon. The Boracay Funboard Cup will be the first event of the 2010 Philippine windsurfing and kiteboarding championship.
