How To Feed A Sea Turtle

Directions: How to Feed A Sea Turtle. Following the success of the How To Jump Off A Boat video in the last issue, this video introduces a green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), munching its way through a sparse field of sea grass near Club Paradise island resort, northern Palawan. In this How To Feed a Green Sea Turtle video, those scuba diving nearby introduce themselves to the green sea turtle and offer some sea grass from their hands; watch as the green sea turtle politely accepts the offering, thanks the scuba divers by waving at the camera and then swims off, with its passenger load of remoras, to regain some privacy. A thoroughly civilised sea turtle.

Folklore around Batangas province suggests that a visitation by a green sea turtle, or “pawikan” (pa-we-can), is a sign of extreme misfortune – if a pawikan should enter your fish ponds the misfortune can only be countered by giving away, as opposed to selling, all the fish in the ponds . . . an act that sounds to me like extreme misfortune in itself, presumably the alternative is worse. Or, in the Visayas, the pawikan, or rather the pawikan’s tail, sun-dried and powdered, sprinkled in the underwear of a suspected philandering spouse will guarantee to catch him and her (or her and him) in the act – apparently the powdered pawikan tail, transferred unnoticed from underwear to the skin, will combine with the moistures of amorous activity to form an adhesive that only a surgeon can very carefully undo. Ouch!

Our recommendation is: with the goal of travel and tourism development, promote the growth of sea grass so that the green sea turtle / pawikan can live long and happy, far away from fish ponds and suspected philanderers.
