Caliraya Lake Windsurfing Commodore’s Cup

Photograph, windsurfing, Caliraya Lake

Photo by Jijo de Guzman – Caliraya Lake, Laguna province, “just past Pagsanhan Falls” was the venue last weekend for the last of five legs in the national windsurfing championship season of 2008. The Caliraya Lake Commodore’s Cup attracted both Filipino and international windsurfing participants; breezes of 25 to 30 knots across the lake ensured some fantastic competition and super-fast action.

The windsurfing season kicks off next year in Boracay. Between the 11th to 17th of January, 2009, you need to be at Bulabog Beach, Boracay Island, where the 21st International Fun Board Cup is almost guaranteed to surprise in the extreme. Concurrent with the windsurfing there is also a feast of kiteboarding to entertain and dazzle the international cast of participants and spectators. Entrance to the beach is free and some fantastic photography opportunities await adventurous and courageous photographers, because the water is shallow and it is possible to wade out into the action.

Windsurfing competition moves to Puerto Galera in February then to Anilao in March. The Subic Bay event was in July in 2008, but may change dates in 2009 as they aim for larger audiences and bigger sponsors. The Subic Bay attracted a record number of close to 100 boards and kiteboards in a weekend of fast a furious action between the thunderstorms.

STOP PRESS International FunBoard Cup, Boracay

The 21st International FunBoard Cup in Boracay Island (see news item above) has been postponed, apparently because too many competitors from Europe and North America have been adversely affected by the current Global financial crisis and will not be attending. We are still awaiting further word from the organisers to confirm the new schedule.
