Nuvali Wakepark 7th Philippine Wakeboard Nationals Competition

August 24-25, 2013, the Philippine Wakeboard Nationals competition will be held at the Republ1c Wakepark in Nuvali, Calamba, Laguna. Top wakeboard riders from around the Philippines are expected at Nuvali, to compete for a prize purse on excess of Php200,000. Wakeboard riders get two days of free cable pulls and non-riders (otherwise known as spectators) can enter the Republ1c Wakepark for free.
Wakeboarding is one of the sports with a global following where the Filipino is uniquely equipped for world championship performance. Wakeboarding requires no extreme of physical strength but rather a combination of skill and creativity – something the Filipino has by the arm-pull.
The Republ1c Wakepark at Nuvali is ideally located for the sport of wakeboarding, being within an hour by almost any mode of transport from Metro Manila. Its cable system over the large, man-made oval lake provides non-stop wakeboarding action in almost any weather condition, from 8.30am to 10.00pm daily.
Wakeboarding is one of the fastest growing sports in the Philippines because the participation costs are relatively low (around Php1,000 per day) and the rewards are many: exhilaration, a great workout and the chance to send some amazing Instagrams to friends. During competition, you can add monetary rewards too, although, personally, especially in sports judged on style rather than tangible results, I am not generally in favor of large financial rewards as this encourages irregularities in both athlete preparation and judging.
Once was a time, not so long ago, when you had to travel to Camarines Sur, to CWC, if you wanted to enjoy the thrills and spills of wakeboarding in a cable park; within the past few years, new parks have opened in Davao City, Cebu and Clark Field. There are wakeboard parks circled for construction in the mangrove lakes of southern Tablas Island, not much more than a stone’s throw from Boracay Beach. And, there is even a mobile cable wakeboard system in the country that you can lease for special events.
It seems that finally the Philippines has woken to its potential to train global champions in an international sport that requires no imported talent. The business model says that it is now viable to build wakeparks close to any city or tourist spot, so you can expect to see more wakeparks around the Philippines and a growing number of Philippine champions being crowned around the globe.
